White Squirrel Weather

White Squirrel Weather is an applied research, professional student service-learning initiative at Western Kentucky University comprised largely of students who have each devoted their efforts toward providing focus-based real-time observations and forecast weather content to the WKU campus and community for the purposes of hazards mitigation, and emergency preparedness and management.

Disaster Science Operation Center

The Disaster Science Operation Center integrates critical decision support and disaster security access and opportunities across public, private, government, and academic sectors through student-centered experiential learning and applied research. DSOC is anchored by interdisciplinary operational collaborations at WKU between White Squirrel Weather and the Meteorology Program, Environmental Health & Safety, Public Broadcasting, and Athletics. Together, these units interface with Police, Fire, Emergency Medical Services, and Emergency Management for anticipated risk, incident management, and all-hazards monitoring and communications. A unique element of DSOC is our innovative undergraduate and graduate online certificate programs in Emergency Management Disaster Science (EMDS). Our EMDS programs offer students and professionals a robust co-credential for advanced career readiness and student success. DSOC professionals have expertise and experience in education outreach and safety training across all sectors. The DSOC hosts a collection of specialized services for notable agencies and industry partnerships . We specialize in weather intelligence, scalable weather and climate monitoring, client-specified hyperlocal forecasting, applied health and safety training seminars, mobile outreach technology, private industry research, and special-events monitoring.
